Somewhere along the way people realized that the story of the Jewish Holocaust was not theirs alone to suffer. This film is a perfect example of how the real hardships of Eastern Europe were in play long before Hitler and World War 2 had their devastating impact upon the face of Humanity. Not that Nazis and Fascists from the Mussolini camp should be released of any particular cruelty or incriminations, but more to the point that the people of these countries and other countries including Mother Russia were the very source of the mentality which produced both scarcity and forms of hate that lead to the massive genocides of their time.
Many revolts and reactions in history have placed us on our feet to understand injustice, but seldom is it that we hear the story of those who go quietly and not even so blindly to another home or heart of being. This film lies at the heart of the truth in this perspective... you did not need to be a jew or a pole or a gypsy in those times as a part of watching your family die and those you love the most be obliterated conveniently from the ranks of the elite world making its way towards 'the bold futurism found in fascist ideas designed to save the economy for those privileged enough to own rank, land or social title. You might even be exterminated if you posed a problem to the acquistion of these things.... the world would not wait on your values or your culture if they did not serve the mechanism of 'progress and improved terms of dominance.'
Obviously the term stakeholder took on a whole new meaning, but this is not a comedy nor is it a vampire fantasy. The film had few moments of light hearted redemptions and even fewer moments of fantasy. This is not to say that it was not without beauty, opulence and the good grace of nature and tender feelings. It might have even been a supposition that to have too much of one would create a lack of the other. The film certainly took nothing nor little for granted in its expose of both ruthless and malignant values being clearly displayed for the whole truth of their disintegrating quality in the lives of the meek and trusting folk who simply wanted to live, love and revel in the beauty of what god alone can give.
Yes I wax on a bit and hope that you will endure the 'prologue' of a discussion based in understanding the true presence and majesty of the role which Depp was given to play. To this day he will choose a gypsy king in all his falling grace as a role to the looks and types of the Tom Cruise and Matt Damon typecast. These characters are all action oriented and practiced in some art which is to say that Cruise and Damon should be respected for their mastery of presence and skills related to making their films authentic... it is for Depp and his characters however to take us across the divide of compassion in such as way as we are moved to tears and left to know that all the cunning and powerful mastery in the world can still not be able to save the life of a child if that is what great forces are want to do. This is the hope of this film.
The film is spent on the value of a family heirloom which appears as a simple coin and it is passed in a last knowing that a way of life is dead. The coin is not so important but it symbolizes the transference of life itself as a divine gift from generation to generation beyond the pale of misfortune and of malcontent. This coin comes to represent both legacy and dowry from a Russian grandmother to her granddaughter as the potential of escape from persecution and finally arrives and transforms itself as the subtle exchange between lovers to show the greater value of love than just some token of currency into a moment of possibility for one child, a new life of a child as yet unborn, to survive the holocaust and carrying the seed and honor of a man and his way of life beyond the eminent demise of himself and his people.
The skill and mastery of an equestrian people and the beauty of diversity as a world cultural arts is clearly displayed and demeaned into the base forms of popular entertainment as some sort of allegory for the end of a set of values which would make one a king in one life and a pauper in another. This film may lend itself to question the role of dominant patriarchy itself for the sake of understanding 'the old ways' of wisdom and well being which allow a woman her throne. This is all pure conjecture on my part but if any of us females were sitting on the throne that Christina Ricci was sitting on when she got her coronation then we, uhhh, certainly would be feeling very much like a queen with a crown full of stars.... Dont miss this scene and dont miss the message because in times like these its better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all... Magical movie for those of you who are willing to understand why a man would cry.
